Monday night Elmers traveled to East Hampton to face off against the Loco Perro Expos and would leave with a 6-1 victory.
Elmers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Joe Cousineau singled with one out and stole second. Ken Cook reached after being hit by a curveball in the left shoulder. Dan Krot walked and with the bases loaded and Cousineau scored on a wild pitch. Corey Anderson drove in Cook on a sharp ground out to second base.
The Expos loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first with singles by Zack Turner and Brian Seidl; Brian Kohn reached on an error by the third baseman. Nothing would cross the plate as the next two batters struck out versus DJ Dyer.
Zack Turner would settle down for the next three innings retiring the next 10 batters in a row. Ryan Tufano broke the streak with a one out walk followed by a strikeout and a walk by Jeff Jaksina. Nick Dinino singled scoring Tufano and Jaksina scored when Cousineau doubled.
The Expos would threaten again in the fifth inning, but again no runs would cross the plate. Scott Lufbery led off the inning reaching on an error by the third baseman and would advance to second on a Derek Turner ground out to third. Lufbery stole third base, but couldn’t make it 90 more feet as the bottom of the order failed to drive him in.
Ben Fortin relieved Zack Turner in the sixth inning walking the first batter he faced, but retired the next three. Tufano would lead off the seventh on an error by the Expos first baseman and went on to steal second and third and would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cook. Jaksina flew out to center for the second out of the inning. Dinino then drove the ball over Seidl in center field who laid flat out running towards the fence, the ball one-bounced the fence; right fielder Derek Turner picked up the ball and fired it to the Zack Turner at shortstop who then relayed it to Matt Nilson, the catcher, who slapped the tag on Dinino trying for the inside-the-park homerun to end the inning.
Ben Fortin led off the bottom of the seventh with a bunt in which he reached safely by running into the first baseman as he tried to field a low throw and was granted second base due to interference. After a Peter Villa strikeout, Lufbery singled in Ben Fortin for the Expos first run of the game. Derek Turner followed with a base hit up the middle, but that would be it as Austin Shumbo flew out to center and Alex Fortin popped out to third to end the game.
Dyer threw 6 innings, striking out 7 and walked 1 while allowing 0 runs on 5 hits for the win.
Zack Turner went 5 innings, striking out 4 and walked 4 while allowing 5 runs on 4 hits in the loss.
Note: The Expos book had Elmers nine hitter with the name “#19 Jake M.” but the website roster has #19 as Jeff Jaksina. If I used the wrong name in the story please let me know so I can change it.
