The Moodus Nationals hosted the Portland Panthers on opening night at Memorial Field. The Nationals took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on an RBI single by SS Cody Depensia. Mike Baccaro pretty much dominated the rest of the game on the mound for the Panthers as he pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts, 0 walks and 2 hit batsmen. The Panthers took the lead 2-1 in the top of the 6th inning when Troy Carpenter walked with the bases loaded. They added a run in the top of the 7th, when Brandon Lagueux crushed a double to centerfield, as Todd Johnson scored from 1st to give Portland a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 7th for the Nationals, Spencer Daly doubled to drive home Adam Michaud to cut the lead to 3-2. On the next play, Panthers SS Todd Johnson potentially saved the game when he fielded a ground ball behind 2nd base and fired to 1st for the out, keeping Daly from advancing past 3rd base. With 1 out and the tying run on 3rd, the Nationals attempted a suicide squeeze but Daly was tagged out at home plate when the bunt attempt was missed. Mike Baccaro proceeded to strike out the next batter to end the game, giving the Panthers the 3-2 victory. John Stetz also added 2 hits for the Panthers and the Nationals Spencer Daly had a stellar 3 for 3 performance including a double.
