Elmer’s overcame tough odds and injuries to win their first ever MTL World Championship tonight. Trailing the series 1-0 to the Plaza Azteca Indians, Elmer’s won game 2 immediately when it resumed after going 13 innings and into early Thursday morning. Ken Cook hit a 3-2 pitch into centerfield to give Elmer’s the walk off 3-2 victory and even the series at 1-1. Both teams though were low on pitchers.
Game 2 saw Elmer’s take an early 2-0 lead on infield outs, as Indians starter John Skinner took himself out of the game due to a knee injury. Francisco Perez came on to pitch and kept Elmers off balance so the Indians could come back. Trailing 2-0 in the 3rd inning the Tribe tied it on a bases loaded 2 out, 2 run single to right by Chris Barsa. It looked like the Indians would get more when Rich Neiman hit a liner to the gap in right center, but Matt Morrison made a nice lunging catch to save 2 runs.
In the bottom of the 5th the Indians would take the lead off Ken Cook on a leadoff double to right by Brian Nessing and another double to right center by Brian Pinney giving the Indians a 3-2 lead after 5 and 6 outs away from the Championship.
However, in the top of the 6th Elmers got the lead guy on 2b due to a throwing error. Mike Cook then hit a 3-2 pitch just over the RF head for a triple, tying the game at 3-3. Ken Cook then once again drove in what turned out to be the winning run with a sac fly to LF giving Elmer’s a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th, Keith Echervarria hit a 1 out single to center. Brian Pinney flied out to deep left center with Anderson making a nice catch for out number 2. Brian Filbig was the Indians last hope. He launched what looked to be a series winning, walk off 2 run HR to left field. But Corey Anderson raced back to the fence and made a tremendous over the shoulder running catch, taking extra bases and maybe even a HR away from the Indians catcher. That ended the incredibly exciting series with Elmer’s celebrating on Rotary Field. Ken Cook got the gatorade dunk as the team and fans of Elmer’s cheered.
