In a pitchers duel, one run is usually all you need. The Loco Perro Expos got that one run and continued an unthinkable run through the Manchester Twilight League playoffs.
Zack Turner and Dan Livingston traded zeros on the board through six innings and allowed a combined four hits, but there was only one that mattered.
Brian Kohn led off the inning getting hit by a pitch, Zack Turner followed with a bloop in front of the second baseman and Kohn was retired. Matt Nilson came through with the most clutch hit of the season for the Expos, he crushed a 1-0 pitch to deep right center and Zack Turner flew around the bases finishing with a head first dive at home scoring the one and only run of the game.
The entire Expos bench and cheering section erupted as the umpire called Zack Turner safe.
The Expos needed three outs to clinch another playoff win, but they didn’t come easy. Chuck Sauer reached to lead off the inning and advanced to second on the throw as it got past Kohn at first, but Kohn would redeem himself. Mickey Moulin popped out to shortstop and Dan Samociuk grounded out to second. Brian Clark popped up a foul ball about halfway down the first base line, Kohn raced over as the entire field fell silent. He slid, made the catch and the Expos had defeated the number one seed in the Manchester Twilight League playoffs.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Shane Murphy walked, but was retired when Brian Robinson flew out to the right fielder Derek Turner who tossed the ball back to first to complete a very timely double-play.
Zack Turner went 7 innings, allowing zero runs on 3 hits while walking 3 for his second win of the postseason.
The Cinderella run for the Expos continues Tuesday night versus Elmers who had lost the early game of the day to the Plaza Azteca Indians 4-3. With only one game on Tuesday, Elmer’s and Expos will begin at 7 pm at Rotary Field in South Windsor.
I do not have the name of the Willimantic Ridges pitcher. I narrowed it down to those two guys, but if anyone knows, please tell me.
